The problem it solves
Businesses with multiple branches typically have a separate internet connection at each site, configured and managed independently. That works, but it means no shared visibility, no consistent policy, and no intelligent way to route traffic if one connection has a problem.
What SD-WAN actually does
SD-WAN sits across all your connections and actively decides, in real time, which path traffic should take based on what that traffic is. A payment transaction and a large file download don't need the same priority — SD-WAN treats them differently automatically.
Why this matters in practice
If one branch's primary link degrades, traffic shifts to another available path automatically, often before anyone notices. Policies are set centrally instead of being configured branch-by-branch, which matters a lot once you're past 3–4 locations.
Is it worth it for a smaller business?
